There are moments in life that quietly change the way you see everything...
For me, those moments come when I think about the generations yet to come.
I think about my grandchildren. I think about the thousands of students I was privileged
to teach over the past 30 years. Every one of them represents the future of Illinois, and
every one deserves the opportunity to build a life filled with hope, purpose, and
possibility.
When I watch my grandchildren laugh, learn, dream, and discover the world around
them, I can't help but wonder what kind of Illinois they'll inherit. Will it be a place where hard work is rewarded? Where families can afford to stay? Where schools prepare
children for bright futures? Where neighborhoods are safe and people still believe they
can make a difference?
Those questions have become deeply personal for me.
I'm not serving in public life because politics is easy—it isn't. I'm doing it because I
believe every generation has a responsibility to leave things better than they found
them. My parents and grandparents made sacrifices that opened doors for me. Now it's
our turn to open doors for those who follow us.
As a teacher, I spent three decades encouraging young people to believe they could
make a difference. Today, I feel called to do the same by serving my community in a
different way. They are not surprised that I am doing this when I see them around our
community.
Whether you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or simply care about the
next generation, I think we all share the same hope: that they inherit a community
where they can build meaningful lives, raise strong families, and pursue their dreams
without feeling they have to leave the place they call home.
That's why I chose to serve. Not for a title. Not for recognition. But because love for the
next generation is one of the strongest reasons there is to step forward and do the hard
work.
My grandchildren are my daily reminder that our best days don't have to be behind us.
I hope you'll join me in building that future—for them, and for all of ours.
